Yesterday, ESPN released an article that ranked the top 10 defensemen of the 2023 NHL season. The rankings were based on the votes of 10 current players and 10 NHL executives. At #1 was Cale Makar, followed by Adam Fox (#2) and Victor Hedman (#3). Makar is widely regarded as one of the best players in the league, and in his first three seasons, he won Rookie of the Year, the Norris Trophy (best defenseman), the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe Trophy (playoffs MVP). Not too shabby for a 24-year-old in just three seasons. Makar’s 2019 Upper Deck Young Guns RC PSA 10 sold for $600 yesterday. On 2/12/23, two sales of this card averaged $264 (+6%).
Adam Fox, also 24-years-old and a rookie in 2019 products, is another extremely talented defensemen in the NHL. Fox has the third most points by a defenseman over the past three seasons and also won the the Norris Trophy in 2021. He became only the second player ever to be named the best defenseman in the league before a third season, joining the legendary Bobby Orr. His 2019 SP Authentic Future Watch RC Auto /999 BGS 9.5 sold for $273 on 2/12/23, a 24% decrease since 10/2/22.
