Analysis: The effect of transfer rumors on the soccer card market can be dramatic. Take Joao Felix for instance. Joao is a 23-year-old forward for Atletico Madrid who has had a somewhat disappointing time at Atletico. Atletico paid a massive transfer fee to Benfica for Felix in 2018 (127M euros), but Atleti deploys defensive minded tactics that don’t make the most of Felix’s abilities. It’s hurt his card market, as his 2018 Topps Chrome Base RC PSA 10 decreased 47% in the last year. In the last month, with his name in the transfer market connected to teams like Arsenal and Man U, this card increased 58%. It moved from $38 on 12/5/22 to $60 on 1/1/23. It will be interesting to see what this card does when/if a loan or transfer is completed. Will it keep increasing or will the build up to a transfer make more of an impact than the transfer itself? Only time will tell.
